On June 3rd, Hearts United for Animals took in 20 dogs from a puppy mill near Valley, Nebraska. The conditions were deplorable. The dogs suffered in pitch darkness, locked in an old dilapidated barn with no windows. Many of the dogs lived this way for years. At first they cowered in fear not knowing what to expect of their rescuers, or even what to make of the sunlight that had never before touched their beautiful faces. Tears fell from the eyes of one gorgeous little red Chihuahua as she realized her nightmare was over. She stopped shaking as she was held in the arms of an HUA volunteer.
There were several puppies in the group. Four of the puppies were only 6 weeks old and had been separated from their mother. One of the four Papillon pups, a little girl named Mary, is very ill. She cries for her mother, from whom she never should have been separated so young, but she is taking comfort in her siblings. It will be an uphill battle but we will do all within our power to make sure that these pups survive.
The older dogs have extensive medical needs. They have rotting teeth from lack of care and poor nutrition, mouths full of infection, hernias, mammary tumors, eye infections, fur loss from stress and urine scalding from the filthy conditions. In time they will heal. They will feel better and as they feel better they will blossom into the loving, adoring, trusting companions that they always should have been. It may take time to find them the wonderful homes they deserve and at HUA they will get all of the time, medical attention and love that they need to give them their lives back.
Please consider donating to help these dogs with their recoveries at www.hua.org Thank you.
Animals were abandoned for 2-3 weeks in this “sorry excuse for a pound” in Auburn, Nebraska. This is NOT Hearts United for Animals where I volunteer. HUA was involved in rescuing these poor souls. How can this be happening in our country? Read more about it at www.hua.org Click on the picture entitled HUA helps close to home. See what miserable conditions these animals lived in.
I spent Sunday with my girl friends. They are all very sweet and a lot of fun. Their names are Nedda, Jesselyn, Cicely & Lovina. They live at Hearts United for Animals. They are waiting for their “forever homes”. For more information contact hua.org.

Nedda is content to lay down and get lots of petting and attention.

This beautiful girl is very loving.

Cicely loves attention once she gets to know you.

Lovina loves people especially when they give her treats.

There are a lot of people that question Michael Vick’s sincerity about how his prison time has helped him see the light concerning animal cruelty. If the public were allowed to sentence him, he probably would still be in prison and not allowed to play professional football ever again. Regardless of animal lovers opinions about his actions and how he has been penalized, his actions have increased public awareness about illegal dog fighting and animal cruelty in our country.
Children learn what they live. Children need to learn how to love and care for animals. Children need to learn to value animals lives. Children need to learn to not participate in animal cruelty and to report it to the authorities if they witness such things. Children need to learn that as they become adults they can choose not to be involved in animal cruelty even if they grew up watching adults allow it. We, as adults, need to teach our children that what Michael Vick did is inhumane and against the law. Deep inside we know when something is right or wrong. As children grow into adults, they need to honor those feelings and act accordingly. There is no excuse for animal abuse!
We will be watching Michael Vick to see if he is sincere. We should be watching for and reporting animal cruelty in our own neighborhoods as well. It can happen anywhere. There were families living near our office that were allowing dog fighting on their front porch with children watching! Children learn what they live.
Check out this amazing dog, Eartha and her amazing caretaker and trainer, John Adams! Thanks to John and Hearts United for Animals, Eartha was trained to track lost dogs. Read more about Eartha and John at www.JournalStar.com under entertainment section – August 4th, 2009.
Hearts United for Animals of Auburn, Nebraska rescued 106 dogs from puppy mills in the state yesterday. HUA is a no kill shelter and sanctuary where I volunteer to help socialize these dogs I am very happy that the inspectors are working with HUA to save these dogs. They will need a lot of love and care before being adopted to their forever homes. HUA will provide them with everything they need. Please remember to ADOPT not shop. Most pet store puppies come from these parent dogs that live in these horrid conditions. Please read about this rescue at www.journalstar.com in the local news section and watch a news video at: www.KolnKgin.com/home/headlines/52231017.html.
